SOS for Cuba began as an urgent response to a moment when Cubans on the island were risking their safety to speak openly. The project preserves their stories, explains the systems used to silence dissent, and gives readers a place to understand the events of July 11, 2021 in context.
Our purpose
We believe the people of Cuba deserve freedom of expression, assembly, movement, conscience, and political participation. Peaceful disagreement must not lead to surveillance, harassment, detention, violence, or exile.
This is an advocacy publication, not a neutral wire service. We are transparent about that point. Our responsibility is still to distinguish documented facts from opinion, link to primary or reputable sources, correct errors, and make clear when a historical claim may have changed.
What changed in this redesign
The original Gatsby website combined a long advocacy homepage with databases, submission forms, donations, newsletter integrations, and a large COVID-era section. This new edition is deliberately content-only:
- Evergreen writing and relevant media have been preserved.
- The 2020–2022 COVID section, statistics, API calls, and associated media were removed.
- Protest submissions, Fauna data, donation flows, Mailchimp, and behavioral tracking were removed.
- Articles now live in MDX files so the archive can grow without rebuilding page components.
Language and accessibility
Version one publishes in English. The content tree is organized by locale so a Spanish edition can be introduced without restructuring the application. The site is designed for keyboard navigation, readable contrast, reduced-motion preferences, and resilient mobile layouts.
